The function of the fly fishing rod is casting the fly to a particular target to catch a fish. The fly imitation tied at the end of the rod is usually light. The line thus needs to have weight in order to cast it to any distance.Rods are designed to cast a specific line weight to achieve the best results. 2, 3 and 4 weight rods are structured to cast relatively short distances and catch smaller fish.

5 and 6 weight rods are general purpose rods and can be used for any purpose, anywhere. 7 and above rod weights are used in more waters where you will need to cast longer distances and catch bigger fish. You can choose a rod depending on where you plan to fish and the species you are going for.

A slow action rod bends in the bottom third of the rod near the reel. Casting long distances with slow action rods can be hard. A medium action rod is bend near the middle of the rod. Fast action rods are stiff and bends in the last third of the rod.

Casting longer distances with fast action load is easier as they provide more power and longer distances.
